Text and the Visual Imagination/Puppetry

This course explores puppetry, both contemporary and
historical, as a means of interpreting texts using visual
means. Projects will be designed to: stimulate the visual
imagination; develop sensitivity to the expressive nature of
the theatrical mise-en-scene as it relates to puppet design,
including puppet movement and gesture; apply principles of
design and composition to a variety of historical styles of
puppetry including shadow, rod, and masked performer; and
adapt text for the puppet theater.
MAJOR READINGS
Reading will be selected from a wide variety
of sources, which might include: Greek tragedies,
Shakespearean sonnets, newspapers, contemporary poetry and
prose, popular songs, or scientific papers.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Weekly assignments,
culminating in a final performance project.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Class to meet in
one three-hour session per week.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
