The purpose of this seminar is to raise questions about critical concepts and discourses, and about literary history. For 1995 the organizing topic will be "First Images of America in Colonial Literature". Overview of European impressions and assumptions about "America" on encounter and subsequent contact. Topics discussed: problems of reading those texts, fiction vs. history, the noble savage, the exchange symbols, the notion of quest, utopianism vs. materialism, and the point of view of the conquered.
