Theater and film are among the most visible forms of art
and are therefore the ones most directly affected by
censorship. They will be studied for the way they reflect
and are affected by social and political change throughout
the period of the Franco dictatorship. The study begins
with Franco's military victory in 1939 and ends with the
Socialist party's election victory in 1981. Attention will
be focused on the similarities and differences between
theater and film as communicative media and on the formal
composition of the various dramatic sub-genres that appear
on Spanish stage during this period (e.g., comedy vs.
tragedy, historical drama, theater of the absurd, the
farce).
