SPAN243
Modern Spanish Fiction
SPAN243 SP
Next Offered in 9899 SP
The period 1880-1930 is pivotal in Spanish culture. It is
bracketed by the restoration and demise of the monarchy and
is characterized by profound social and economic
transformation. A correlation may be drawn between the
history of the novel and cultural history, since the novel
undergoes equally profound changes during the same period.
We will center our attention on this correlation by treating
the novel as a vehicle for representing not reality per se
but rather a mode of understanding reality. Our ultimate
goal is to understand Spain's evolution toward 'modernity'
as reflected by this genre.
