Most of the canonical works of literature of early modern
Spain, and indeed of Spain before the latter part of the
nineteenth century, were written by men who owed their
license to write to their relation to authority--as lawyers,
secretaries to noble families, or as men of noble blood
themselves,--and they wrote for a nervously status-conscious
public. How, then, should we interpret the many works that
represent outsiders: Turks, moriscos, thieves, pimps,
prostitutes--and all unconventional women? How are these
text positioned in relation to what they represent? Do they
present subversive or contestatory discourses, or are they,
in the final analysis, complicit with the dominant codes and
practices of their culture?

Three short papers, one
midterm exam, one take home final.

SPAN237 is intended
for students who have completed SPAN224 with a B or better.
Students who have not done so should consult with the
professor before preregistering. Readings, class
discussion, and written work in Spanish only.
Preregistered students whose Spanish proficiency is
insufficient will be asked to withdraw. SPAN224 or its
equivalent is expected.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students
must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's office.
