Primary attention will be given to Don Quijote, with supplementary related readings in criticism and imaginative literature. Some major considerations will be: the genesis of Don Quijote as a parody of chivalric romance, and its subsequent engagement of nearly the entire range of contemporary literary forms and theoretical debates; the way in which Cervantes structures authority within the complex and playful layering of his narrative, and the resultant positioning of the reader; perspectivism, skepticism, temporality and humor; the representation of the relationship between literature and life, and of the effects of reading on people. Such inquiries should help us understand in what sense Cervantes' comic masterpiece can be considered "the first modern novel," and lead to an appreciation of the multiplicity of interpretations which the work has undergone throughout the centuries.
