The first half of the course will interpret WAR AND PEACE as a synthesis of narrative models developed by Tolstoy in his earlier writings (from CHILDHOOD to THE COSSACKS) and as an oblique dialogue with other political, philosophical, and literary voices (including Turgenev's and Dostoevsky's) of the 1860s. The second half of the course (with readings that begin with ANNA KARENINA and end with HADZHI MURAD) studies divergences and parallels in the paths taken by Tolstoy-the-Tolstoyan and Tolstoy-the-writer in the period 1870-1910.
