An examination of the history and literature of the earliest
writings about Jesus. Attention will be given to the
literary forms used in the composition of gospel literature,
the social and religious functions of the traditions within
believing communities, the role of imagination in the
production of gospel texts, and the diversity of
interpretations of Jesus in the early church. Readings will
focus on the gospels of Mark, John, Peter, Thomas and "Q".

Two short papers (4 pages
each); one long paper (20 pages).

Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
This course fulfills a "Critical Disciplines" departmental
requirement.
