Politics and Piety in Early Christianity RELI286 FA

An introduction to the political, social and religious world of Christiantiy during the first three centuries of the Common Era. Through lectures and discussion sessions, this course will explore the controversy between emerging "orthodoxy" and "heresy" and its propagandistic impact upon the development of church organizations, interpretations of sexuality and the roles of women, the rise of gnosticism and the formation of the Christian Bible.

This course fulfills a "Religion in Society" departmental requirement. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
