This course examines the many ways in which religion is understood and practiced by a variety of communities as well as by scholars in the field of religious studies. The three divisions of the curriculum of the Department--critical approaches, religious traditions, religion and society--are used to describe and analyze religious experiences of the sacred, the place of ritual in the formation of communities, the ways in which practice and performance generate conviction and belief, and the significance of myth and religious narrative in providing schemes of meaning.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Students will be given a midterm examination consisting of short answers and brief essays that will count 20% of the final grade. A final examination consisting of longer essays will count for 30% of the final grade. A term paper of 8-10 pages will be due approximately two weeks before the final day of class and will count for 30% of the final grade. A proposal for the final paper will be due at the time of the midterm, and a draft of the paper will be due two weeks before the due date for the paper.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

There will be a weekly writing assignment on the assigned readings until shortly before the term paper is due. The quality of the writing assignments, class and section participation, and attendance will together count for 20% of the final grade. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
