How and why do people change? How effective are our current technologies for changing behavior? How do we construct environments that will enable individuals to fulfill their potential? This seminar will try to develop answers to the above questions. We will consider evidence suggesting that there are genetic and constitutional influences that contribute to stability and change in behavior. Environmental interventions to promote change will be considered in terms of the interpenetrated and imbricated nature of genetic and environmental influences. We will consider these issues as a basis for the development of a theory of intervention that will provide a foundation for clinical practice.

MAJOR READINGS

A variety of primary source readings in
journals and chapters in books. The articles selected will
deal with genetic and environmental influences; longitudinal
studies relating childhood characteristics to adult

characteristics; outcome studies of various psychological
interventions including psychotherapy outcome research and
the effects of educational interventions.
