Photo Caption and Credits

The first term of a general physics course with calculus. The focus is on Newtonian mechanics and its ramifications and thermodynamics. An objective of this course is to go beyond a conceptual understanding of the material and to develop the ability to achieve precise, quantitative solutions to examples illustrating the physics being studied.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two hour exams plus a final exam. Weekly problem sets.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

A semester of calculus (in secondary school or college) is a prerequisite. Problem solving help sessions, run by undergraduate TAs, are provided weekly. The associated laboratory course, PHYS123, is optional. Students planning to enter the health professions should be aware that a year of physics WITH LABORATORY is usually required for admission. Consult your major adviser if you are in doubt about similar requirements in your field.
