This half-credit, half-semester course is intended for junior philosophy majors. Its principal aim is to introduce students to basic philosophical concepts, distinctions, and forms of argumentation, and to develop students' abilities to read philosophical texts critically. After several initial lectures, class sessions will be devoted to careful analysis of philosophical texts from various fields and historical periods. These discussions will be introduced by group presentations. The course will also provide an occasion for junior majors to become acquainted and to begin to develop a community of philosophical inquiry.

Group presentations; one 7-10 page paper with required rewrite; final exam.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Junior philosophy majors are expected to take this course, but others--including sophomores highly likely to major in philosophy--may be admitted, by permission of the instructor, if space permits. Students admitted to the major may acquire permission forms from the Philosophy Department Administrative Assistant; others must see the instructor.
