Graduate Seminar in South Indian Music

Topics will be selected according to the background and
research/performance interests of enrolled students.
Emphasis will be upon placing South Indian performance
issues in theoretical context and applying the
methodological tools of ethnomusicology (transcription,
analysis, field research techniques, etc.) to these
problems.
MAJOR READINGS
Assignments will be given from the specific
historical and theoretical literature on Indian music, as
well as more general works pertaining to the field of
ethnomusicology. Sound recordings and video tapes will also
constitute important "texts."
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Individual research/
performance projects will be assigned, with weekly
discussion of common methodological concerns. Regular
reading and listening assignments will provide a common
frame of references, and periodic informal performances will
alternate with presentations of written work, culminating in
a substantial research paper (combined where appropriate
with performance) by each student.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This seminar is
intended for graduate students, but is not limited to those
who specialize in South Indian music. Upper-level
undergraduates will be considered only on an exceptional,
individual basis.
