The musics of the Caribbean have had an impact on the rest
of the world which is greatly out of proportion to the
relatively small land mass and population of the West
Indies. This course will explore contemporary music
practices of the Caribbean (both traditional and
popular/commercial), historical antecedents, the role of
music in every day life, and relationship of music to the
social and political history of the region. There will be a
focus on the musics of Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican
Republic, Puerto Rico and the French Antilles.

There will be two exams, one
term project/paper and a number of short weekly assignments.

communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
