Introduction To Folk Music Studies MUSC213 SP

The course introduces a broad spectrum of approaches to and experiences with folk music, including both research and creative projects and ranging from the voices of peasants through the folk-based sound of recent rock groups. Euro-American materials will be stressed but worldwide sources will be tapped. "Folk" as an ideological and political, as well as musical, category will be discussed, as well as its relationship to "popular" and "classical." Specific genres, such as the ballad, will be both studied and created.

Weekly reading responses, midterm and final paper projects (fieldwork or research).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

The course includes hands-on as well as text experiences. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
