The students acquire a thorough grounding in contemporary Euro-American notation including reading movable clefs, notating moderately advanced rhythmic constructions, and writing a clear and efficient manuscript. They learn to transcribe melodies from oral dictation, to describe the scales and meters of their transcriptions, and to sing on sight and reproduce by ear scales, melodies and rhythms from a variety of musics of the world. They are also introduced to systems for naming and classifying intervals and meters, and to the basic vocabulary of music-theoretic discourse.
