Historical Perspective on Calculus

This is a course in the history of mathematics in which the mathematics is as important as the history. Classical Greek viewpoint. Archimedes' viewpoint. Early medieval changes in perception of central problems. The mathematical renaissance. Calculus according to Newton. Calculus according to Leibniz. Calculus as developed by Euler. Topics in 18th-century mathematics. Students should have a good grasp of the first two semesters of calculus. The level of abstraction will be about that of a calculus course. A few of the calculations will be at a level of complexity slightly higher than that of a calculus course.
