The enrolled students and the three faculty members will work cooperatively on significant, open-ended problems selected from diverse areas of mathematics, with the goal of clarifying relationships among various mathematical topics and their applications. While learning and applying a spectrum of problem-solving approaches (reinforced by the shared experience of group study), students will be actively involved in the processes of observation, pattern recognition, conjecture, and proof and thus will develop some mathematical maturity.

MAJOR READINGS

Handouts will be provided.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Homework due each class.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Regular class attendance and consistent submission of homework will be required for continuing in the semester. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
