The Age of Nero

Nero, Artist or Monster (or both)? This course will focus
on the personality and politics of the emperor and the
reaction he evoked in contemporary and subsequent accounts
of his reign. We will discuss the omnipresent theatricality
of the period and the sense in many of the Neronian texts of
a world falling apart.

Tacitus, ANNALS, books 13-16 (selections)
Suetonius, LIFE OF NERO (selections)
Petronius, SATYRICON (selections)
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Take-home translation exam,
one short and one long paper. Occasional oral reports in
class.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Students should
normally have taken at least one Latin course at the 200
level or the equivalent. In doubtful cases, consult
instructor.
