Introduction to Italian Literature and Culture: 12th-19th Centuries

This course furnishes an introduction to a wide range of
Italian literary and cultural documents from the Middle Ages
to the 19th Century. The lectures with discussion tracing
the rise of the Italian Language and the concomitant
development of Italian Literature from St. Francis through
decadentismo will offer students the chance to improve their
skills in Italian and give them a solid foundation on which
to build their understanding of Italian Literature.
MAJOR READINGS
Selections from THE DIVINE COMEDY, the
DECAMERON, Renaissance Theater, 18th Centry documents such
as periodicals and debates of the Academmie, selections from
THE BETROTHED, and others.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
A one-two-page paper due every
other week and a final paper between 7-10 pages in length.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Class conducted in
Italian and all coursework to be done in Italian.
This course is intended for students who have completed ITAL
112 (formerly ITAL 214) with a B- or better. Students who
have not done so should consult with the professor before
preregistering.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
