Emphasizing the study of literature, philosophy, history, and religion, the Humanities Program explores values and problems that have shaped civilization during the past 3,000 years. These courses, intended specifically for first-year students, afford an excellent context for future study at Wesleyan, especially as preparation for further work in these departments and programs: Art, Asian Languages and Literatures, Classical Studies, the College of Letters, English, German Studies, Medieval Studies, Music, Philosophy, Religion, Romance Languages and Literatures, and Russian Language and Literature.

Enrollment in humanities sections is limited in order to make lively discussion possible. Writing in expository and creative veins is stressed.
