Heritage Of China and Japan

This course explores religions, philosophies, literatures,
and aesthetics of East Asia; Western attitudes toward Asia;
and the interaction of East Asian cultures with each other
and with the West. Readings will include Buddhist,
Confucian, and Taoist writings, and Chinese and Japanese
literature. Guest speakers and discussions.
MAJOR READINGS
Primary and secondary readings on Buddhism,
Confucianism and Taoism; readings in Chinese and Japanese
literature and aesthetics; readings in intercultural
contacts.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Frequent short papers, final
exam.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Writing skills will
be emphasized.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
