An exploration of the first three centuries of the
Amerindian-European contact in the northeastern woodlands.
The course will focus on exploring the creation,
persistence, and decline of "middle grounds" where
Amerindians and Europeans, however briefly, succeeded in
accommodating to each other in ways that changed both
without destroying either.

Weekly readings, two critical
essays, and the preparation of a short research paper on a
topic of one's choice.

Interested
sophomores must consult the instructor before registering in
HIST356.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
