This class explores the ways in which the study of sport
either illuminates or mystifies broader features of the
American past. Some of the topics we tackle include the
emergence of baseball as "America's game," the relationship
between education and sporting activities, and sporting
participation as a means for acculturation and progress. We
shall also explore the role sport has played in the cultural
construction of national identities elsewhere. Our central
focus will be on popular sporting activity along with the
political significance of such engagement.
