strong indigenous heritage. Topics include the
preconquest societies; the Indo-European conflict; the
colonial period; 19th-century economic dependency;
20th-century indigenista movements and contemporary
political revolutions.

Midterm exam, final exam, two
short (4-6 page) papers.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
No late papers will
be accepted, no incompletes, no unexcused absences.
Readings subject to change, depending on availability of
texts. Latin American history books go out of print
quickly.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
