Photo Caption and Credits
This course will examine the intellectual currents that
shaped American culture from the colonial period through the
Civil War. A close reading of texts illustrative of
Puritanism, the Enlightenment, Revolutionary republicanism,
Jeffersonian and Jacksonian democracy, transcendentalism and
reform.

of John Winthrop, John Cotton, Thomas Hooker, Mary
Rowlandson, Cotton Mather, Jonathan Edwards, William Byrd,
Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Paine, James Madison,
Jefferson, Frederick Douglass, Emerson, Jackson, Thoreau,
Poe, Melville, Charles Finney, Whitman, Harriet B. Stowe
and Lincoln, among others.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
One hour quiz, several short
papers and a final exam.
