Photo Caption and Credits

An introduction to the history of Southern Africa which examines precolonial African societies, the growth of white settlement, and the struggle for dominance in the region. The second half of the course covers industrialization, segregation and apartheid and examines the ways blacks and whites, men and women, have shaped, and been shaped, by these processes. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of religion in shaping the social and political history of the region.

Three papers of medium length and a final take-home examination.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
