Japan is the first non-Western country to have transformed itself into a modern economic and (at least before 1945) military superpower. The purpose of this course is to gain an understanding of how Japan changed itself from a "closed country" at the beginning of the 19th century, to an empire-holding military giant by the late 1930s, to an economic superpower from the ashes of World War II.
