Photo Caption and Credits
After beginning with the collapse of the Ming dynasty and
the last flourishing of imperial China under the Qing, we
will then explore the various social, economic and political
forces confronting China in the nineteenth and twentieth
centuries. Compelled toward change, China over the past two
centuries presents a truly epic story, featuring both grand
(and utopian) visions and unimaginable hardships. One of the
themes of this course will be to examine what the Chinese
themselves have had to say: how they have struggled to come
to terms with their own cultural history, and to redefine
what it means to be China (and Chinese) in the modern world.
