This survey course will introduce the early history and culture of northern Europe until about 1100. The focus will be on the British Isles and Scandinavia from the first appearnace of people, through the subsequent immigration of Celtic and Germanic peoples, until their gradual integration into the broader European culture. Topics of special consideration will include the early archaeological record, Roman Britain, pre-Christian religion and the process of Christianization, the ethos of war in the age of Arthur and Beowulf, the Vikings, and the question of whether this was a "golden age" for women.
