Hellenistic Poetry GRK 281 SP

Readings in the newly discovered comedies of Manander, the pastoral poetry of Theocritus, the romantic epic of Apollonius, the hymns, epigrams and narrative verse of Callimachus, and selected lyrics from the Greek Anthology (with an occasional look at the works of minor poets of the age). Among the issues discussed will be the prevalence of erotic motifs, the creation and transformation of genres, the role of the writer in the Hellenistic world, and the impact of Hellenistic poetry on Roman literature.

MAJOR READINGS

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Mid-term, final examination, periodic examinations in the language, 2 papers.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students should normally have taken at least one Greek course the the 200 level or the equivalent. In doubtful cases, consult instructor.
