Lysias and Lyric Poetry

In this course we will study aspects of the private lives of
the ancient Greeks by reading IN GREEK: (1) an oration of
Lysias dealing with a case of adultery in which family life
is described in detail; (2) one oration of Lysias dealing
with a case of assault arising from two men's amorous
rivalry for possession of a male lover; (3) a selection of
lyric poems by such authors as Sappho and Alcaeus. Although
some attention will be given to grammar and syntax, the
major focus of the course will be on rhetorical and literary
criticism, and on ancient Greek concepts of marriage, and
sexuality (both heterosexual and homosexual).

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Translation quiz after each
major reading section; final (10 page) paper on one of the
following topics: (1) Marriage and Family Life; (2)
Homosexuality in Greek Antiquity; (3) Eros in Antiquity.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
The ability to read
ancient Greek is a requirement for this course. The
principal course texts are in Greek, not in English.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
