Explores linkages between politics and society in post-1947 India. Among the topics covered are the legacy of the past from Mughal rule to partition, the successful development of democracy despite what democratic theory would regard as unfavorable conditions; caste, ethnic, and religious conflicts in Indian society; the challenges of economic reform and poverty-reduction; and India's new foreign policy in the post-Cold War era.
