This seminar will look at the politics of immigration and citizenship in the advanced industrial world, focusing on the United States, Great Britain, France and Germany. We begin by looking at the history of immigration and its impact on current immigration policy and citizenship laws in these countries. The second section of the course is concerned with the experience of the largest immigrant groups in the four countries. Of particular importance are the opportunities for political activity and mobilization available to immigrant groups. The third section focuses on the effect of immigration on the politics and economics of the four countries. In the final section, we will examine the validity of various economic, cultural and political arguments for restricting immigration and the rise of new nativist and anti-immigrant movements in the advanced industrial world.
