A selection of oral and written literature of the Middle Ages, concentrating on three areas: 1) the (originally) largely oral literature of the heroic epic and the Norse sagas; 2) the courtly literature of around the year 1200, including the courtly romances and the courtly love-song; and 3) selections from the latter Middle Ages. Themes examined will be order and disorder, profane love, spirituality, orality, literacy.
