A selection of oral and written literature of the Middle
Ages, concentrating on three areas: 1) the (originally)
largely oral literature of the heroic epic and the Norse
sagas; 2) the courtly literature of around the year 1200,
including the courtly romances and the courtly love-song;
and 3) selections from the latter Middle Ages. Themes
examined will be order and disorder, profane love,
spirituality, orality, literacy.

Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
