A close study of the major themes in the works of Thomas Mann (1875-1955) with emphasis on narrative style and structure. Among these themes are the nature and role of the artist, the fascination of death, the fate of Western civilization, the relationship between body and spirit, and the meaning of German history and culture. Attention will also be paid to the evolution of Mann's political attitudes.
