French texts that question notions of plausibility have
frequently been categorized under the rubric of LE
FANTASTIQUE. Is this a genre? How does a writer try to
make the reader believe that which is thought to be
incredible? In this course many questions regarding the
fantastic and their "realistic" counterparts, questions
regarding mimesis, will be addressed in readings by Cazotte,
Potocki, Balzac, Gautier, Zola, Barbey d'Aurevilly, Merimee.
The influences of E.T.A. Hoffmann and of Poe upon French
writers will be examined, and theoretical texts on the
fantastic and mimesis will be studied.

This course is intended for students who have completed a
French course numbered 215 or higher or have placed out of
FREN 215 through the placement test. Students who have not
done so should consult with the professor before
preregistering.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
