This course provides an introduction to a wide range of French literary and cultural texts from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century. Students improve their language skills by reading, discussing, and writing papers in French on representative texts and authors in the French literary tradition. Historical changes in French society, politics, and culture are emphasized. Overall, the course seeks to encourage critical reflection on French literature and the contexts of those texts. Special emphasis on close reading.

Abbe Prevost: MANON LESCAUT

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Three short papers, active discussion of assignments in class, in-class written responses to questions.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This course is intended for students who have completed FREN215 with a grade of B or better or have placed out of FREN215 through the placement test this fall. Students who have not done so should consult with the professor before preregistering. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
