A study of medieval and renaissance Spain as it develops within the three cultures: Latin (Christian), Hebrew, Arabic. Readings encompass oral and written literary traditions, from the 10th through the 16th century. We shall give attention to music and the visual arts, and to the cultural and institutional influences of France and Italy. Conducted in English, but Spanish majors see below under additional requirements.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Oral presentations; 3 short papers; final paper.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Any student may elect to read the material in the original language(s). Spanish majors MUST read in Spanish and meet for additional colloquium if they wish to credit this course towards their major. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
