The richness and variety of Latin American literature is
today well represented in translation, and novels and short
fiction from all parts of the continent are available in
English. As we read these works we will examine the social
and cultural factors influencing writers in the diverse
societies of Latin America. At the same time, we will
consider the choices made by individual authors from the
forms available to them, which range from the fantastic to
the realist and the testimonial. The interior and exterior
realities portrayed in these works are equally fascinating,
and we will explore both, considering how factors such as
gender and ethnicity, socio-economic class and physical
environment, interact with the individual imagination in the
creation of fictional works.
MAJOR READINGS
We will read a collection of short stories
and a selection of novels, probably including works by the
following authors: Claribel Alegria, Jorge Amado, Jose
Donoso, Laura Esquivel, Rosario Ferre, Carlos Fuentes,
Clarice Lispector, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Paco Ignacio
Taibo, and Marta Traba.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Three short papers, class
presentations, midterm and final exams.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's office.
