Reading Bodily Fictions

In this course we will approach the topic of bodily fictions from two perspectives: we will study representations of bodies in various works of fiction from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and we will explore the multiple cultural fictions routinely produced and reproduced about such bodies. Some of the themes to be examined include: literary representations of hysteria, "foreign" bodies and the politics of race, diseased bodies and fictions of health and normalcy, discipline and the modern body, feminist theory and reproductive technologies.

Plath, Michel Foucault, Luce Irigaray, Sander Gilman, Jean
Rhys, Jeanette Winterson, Gayatri Spivak, Audre Lorde.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two short essays (5 pages), oral presentation, and one longer final paper (10 pages).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This course counts toward the English department's theory requirement. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
