Aesthetics and Otherness

This course will examine how texts marked by difference of
race, class, gender, geography, power, technology -
interrupt or appropriate the aesthetic discourse of dominant
cultures. The visible and conscious construction of
counter-aesthetics will be examined in works by, among
others, feminists, Native Americans, African-Americans,
Chicano/Border writers, Asian-Americans.
MAJOR READINGS
The course will include interviews, films,
primary and theoretical texts by, among others, Kant,
Brooks, Barthes, Hutcheon, Cixous, DuBlau Plessis, Gunn
Allen.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
A research proposal, one
research paper (10-15 pages), and a seminar report.
Attendance and participation.

Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
