Romanticism in America
ENGL264 SP

Readings in poetry and some non-fiction prose to show how
Romantic topics are developed by a line of canonical 19th-
and 20th-Century American writers from Ralph Waldo Emerson
to Wallace Stevens, and by a selection of less canonical
20th-Centry writers. Topics of concern include the relation
of nature and consciousness; imagination as a way of knowing
and being; individualism; ideas of freedom.
MAJOR READINGS
Poetry and prose by R.W. Emerson, Emily
Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Wallace Stevens, Gwendolyn Brooks,
Lucille Clifton, Adrienne Rich, Mary Oliver.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Weekly response papers,
several short critical papers, take-home final.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
ENGL201 or
equivalent preparation. Unless preregistered students
attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with
the instructor prior to the first class, they will be
dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still
submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
