ENGL246
Ricardian Poetry
ENGL246 SP
Next Offered in 9899 SP
Although Chaucer is often credited as the first author to
promote poetry written in English, he was only part of a
"flowering of vernacular eloquence" that occurred during the
reign of Richard II. Comparative reading, along with
shorter readings in fourteenth-century history, will allow
us to examine this broader cultural phenomenon.
MAJOR READINGS
will be selected from the following:
Chaucer, BOOK OF THE DUCHESS, HOUSE OF FAME, TROILUS AND
CRISEYDE
Gower, portions of VOX CLAMANTIS (in translation), portions
of CONFESSION AMANTIS
Clanvowe, THE BOKE OF CUPIDE
Langland, PIERS PLOWMAN
ST. ERKENWALD
Pearl-poet, SIR GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT, PEARL
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Several short quizzes, two
short papers (5 pp.), one longer research paper (8-10 pp.)
