A survey of 19th and early 20th century British novels, a
genre which in its British manifestation requires that
readers think critically about nationality and imperialism,
class and class consciousness, and the ever-popular "woman
question".

A Five-page paper, mid-term,
and take-home final.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This course counts
toward the English Department's historical knowledge
requirement.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
Preference in Drop/Add period to people who have taken
ENGL241. The reading load is quite heavy; you will do well
to read some of the novels in advance.
