Photo Caption and Credits

Chaucer wrote in a time of great political and social unrest and linguistic instability, when the status and meaning of secular literature in English was uncertain. This course examines how he fashioned vernacular poetry by reconfiguring traditional images and issues to give them meaning and value within his culture.

centuries after his death.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Several quizzes, two short papers and one longer (8-10 pp.) paper.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This course counts toward the English Department's historical knowledge and pre-1800 requirements. Preregistered students who do not attend the first class will forfeit their reserved place in the class.
