Photo Caption and Credits

A course in the skills of close and "worldly" reading, focusing on lyric.

MAJOR READINGS

A selection of short lyric poems, including
examples from Shakespeare, Donne, Coleridge, Keats, Yeats,
Whitman and Rich.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Many short (3-5 page) papers. No exams.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

A prerequisite for the English major. Hence preference to sophomores. Juniors or transfers who seek admission due to special circumstances should apply for a prerequisite override. Reading assignments are short, but careful reading is essential, since literary analysis is what is being taught. Writing assignments are frequent and sharply focused. But students not especially interested in poetry and not considering a major in English, should not take ENGL201 as a "writing" course. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
