Essentially a fiction-writing course. Techniques of
culturally-diverse, contemporary writers will be explored,
then applied in writing assignments. Each class will be
spent discussing short stories assigned to be read, then
examining stories submitted by members of the class.
MAJOR READINGS
Short stories by Jeanette Winterston,
Chinua Achebe, Marguerite Duras, Sherman Alexie, David Wong
Louie, Edwidge Danticat, Thom Jones, Bharati Mukherjee,
Kenzaburo Oe, plus others.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Weelkly assignment: One short
story to be read. A one-page written critique of that story
to be turned in at each class. Each student will also submit
three to four of their own stories, totaling 30-40 pages by
end of semester. (To be assigned on rotating basis). They
will Xerox stories themselves for each member of the class.
These stories will be discussed in class the following
week.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
To qualify, please
submit a sample short-story, 5-10 pages, to Sheila Kelleher,
English Department, by Noon, Wednesday, September 10th.
Names will be posted on September 15th. The first class will
be held Wednesday, September 17th.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
