This course will focus on the writing of nonfiction and the
forms of the English essay. Readings will be drawn from a
range of genres, both nonfiction and fiction, including
memoirs and profiles, historical and contemporary
commentary, short stories and novels.
MAJOR READINGS
Zinsser: ON WRITING WELL
Kingston: THE WOMAN WARRIOR
Wolff: THIS BOY'S LIFE
Ishiguro: THE REMAINS OF THE DAY
Short pieces including Orwell, Momaday, FitzGerald, Walker,
Baldwin, Finnegan, Tuchman, Alvarez, Dybek, Coles.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Writing assignments weekly.

To apply for
admission, complete the application form available at 279
Court St., Room 102. Deadline to apply: Friday, September
4th, 12:00 noon. This course gives preference to students
whose primary fluency is in languages other than English or
who are fluent in more than one language.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
